Asexual Epichloë Fungi—Obligate Mutualists
نویسندگان
چکیده
Asexual Epichloë are obligate fungal mutualists that form symbiosis with many temperate grass species, providing several advantages to the host. These include protection against vertebrate and invertebrate herbivores (i.e., grazing livestock pests, respectively), improved resistance phytopathogens, increased adaptation drought stress, nutrient deficiency, heavy metal-containing soils. Selected strains utilised in agriculture mainly for their pest traits, which moderated via production of Epichloë-derived secondary metabolites. For pastoral agriculture, use these endophyte infected grasses requires balancing insect pests reduced impacts on animal health welfare.

Origin, Divergence, and Phylogeny of Asexual Epichloë Endophyte in Elymus Species from Western China
Asexual Epichloë species are likely derived directly from sexual Epichloë species that then lost their capacity for sexual reproduction or lost sexual reproduction because of interspecific hybridization between distinct lineages of sexual Epichloë and/or asexual Epichloë species. In this study we isolated asexual Epichloë endophytes from Elymus species in western China and sequenced intron-rich...
متن کاملAnts as Mutualists
The historical emphasis on the ecological and evolutionary importance of antagonistic interactions such as competition, predation, and parasitism is increasingly informed by a recognition of facilitative and mutualistic interactions where one or both participants receive a net benefit (Bertness and Callaway 1994; Bruno et al. 2003; Grosholz 2005; Stachowicz 2001). Interactions between ants and ...

SCIENCE sciencemag.org However, mechanisms are also needed to block expression of genes that specify other cell lineages. Kim et al. identified such a mechanism in the Drosophila male germ line. A multiple–zinc finger protein and a chromatin remodeler were found to act together to block transcription from cryptic promoters. These factors prevented aberrant gene expression and enabled proper dif...
متن کاملEpichloë typhina from toxic tall fescue grasses.
Epichloë typhina, a clavicipitaceous systemic phytopathogen, was isolated from two varieties and three hybrids of tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceae). The morphology of the fescue isolates was compared with E. typhina isolated from bent grass (Agrostis perennans). In all isolates, conidia were identical and were typical of E. typhina. In fescue grasses the endophyte failed to produce stromata, b...
متن کاملEco-evolutionary dynamics of mutualists and exploiters.
With the growing recognition of exploiters as a prominent and enduring feature of many mutualisms, there is a need to understand the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of mutualisms in the context of exploitation. Here, we model coevolution between mutualist and exploiter birth rates, using an obligate pollinating seed parasite mutualism associated with a nonpollinating exploiter as a referen...
